You wishing for no more confessionals. I should have held my breath rather than confessing it all before. So no more love dripping from my tongue; I'll lay cement here in my mouth to keep it down. I give a gift to them who were listening, that they might never hear my many moans again. And no more pleas or apologies from me. I'll need a hand to hold my mouth and coax 'em out. So no more love dripping from my tongue; I'll lay cement here in my mouth to keep it down.

about

King Laconic, a.k.a. Brendan Bennett, is back with The Many Moans, follow-up to his sellout debut EP Muddy Snow. While that record found his straining falsetto wedded to glacial arrangements and ethereal acoustics, The Many Moans comes equipped with a fuller and altogether more confident sound, sonically deeper and dirtier. Lyrically, however, the record is more questioning than it is declarative, with Bennett mired in a postmodern awareness of the artificiality of his medium – that is, the pseudo-authenticity of the so-called ‘confessional’ singer-songwriter – openly admitting his distaste for it and his desire for there to be “no more love / dripping from my tongue”, yet unable to fully leave it behind. The pleasure of the record lies in the contrast between the need to express genuine sentiment and the tone of vitriol which often accompanies such expression. The Many Moans is the conflicted sound of a talented musician and songwriter simultaneously finding his voice and casting it off.

about

King Laconic UK

King Laconic is a Norwich-based singer-songwriter. Guitar playing reminiscent of Elliott Smith or Nick Drake in its intricacy and expressiveness but in no way bound by these references, transcending any and all of his influences through sheer passion and an often startling originality, from delicate picking to propulsive chord progressions and back again, sometimes in the space of a single song ... more
